Excel Keyboard Shortcuts
The following list contains some useful Excel keyboard shortcuts.
- Shift-key is often used in selections
- CTRL and some key is usually a command or in selections does something more than just normal selection.
Moving inside a table |

Arrow down/up/right/left | Goes to next cell. |
CTRL+Arrow down/up/right/left | Moves to last cell in direction within a table (Note. bumbs into an empty cell if found). |
CTRL+G | Goes to any cell. CTRL+G opens a dialog where you can type e.g. V1000, finish by pressing enter. Note: You can also type an area reference to select a range of cells e.g. A10:V1000 |
HOME | Moves to column A in a row. |
CTRL+HOME | Goes to cell A1 (Note. CTRL+END known from many other applications is not very dependaple in Excel). |
CTRL+BACKSPACE | Scrolls back to active cell. Can be used inside a formula as well. |
Selecting Ranges |

SHIFT+Arrow down/up/right/left | Increaces or decreases area selection. |
CTRL+SHIFT+Arrow down/up/right/left | Selects to last cell in direction within a table (Note. bumbs into an empty cell if found). |
CTRL+SHIFT+* | Selects the current region around the active cell (the data area enclosed by blank rows and blank columns). In a PivotTable, it selects the entire PivotTable report. |
CTRL+Space | Selects entire column. |
Shift+Space | Selects entire row. |
Editing and Formatting |

F2 | Move cell editing mode. |
ESC | Exit editing mode (Note. Exits dialog as if Cancel was clicked). |
CTRL+SHIFT+; | Fill current date to cell. |
CTRL+SHIFT+: | Fill current time to cell. |
CTRL+SHIFT+" | Feeds to cell the same value as the cell abobe has. |
CTRL+B/I/U | Toggle Bold/Italic/Underline. |
CTRL+SHIFT+1 | Formats a value to following format: 10,000.00 |
CTRL+1 | Opens Format Cells dialog. |
CTRL+K | Adds hyperling to cell. |
ALT+Enter | Adds linebreak inside a cell. |
CTRL+C | Copy to clipboard. |
CTRL+X | Cut to clipboard. |
CTRL+V | Paste from clipboard. |
ALT, H, V, V | Paste values from clipboard. |
CTRL+Z | Undo operation. |
CTRL+R | Uses the Fill Right command to copy the contents and format of the leftmost cell of a selected range into the cells to the right. |
CTRL+D | Uses the Fill Down command to copy the contents and format of the topmost cell of a selected range into the cells below. |
Finding / replacing |

CTRL+F | Displays a find dialog. |
CTRL+H | Displays a find and replace dialog. |
Formulas |
|
F4 | Circles through different cell references. E.g. A1, $A$1, A$1, $A1. |
F3 | Displays Paste Name dialog. |
ALT+SHIFT+= | Starts formula =SUM() and guesses if data is found from up or left. |
Table operations |
|
CTRL+PgDown | Moves to next table right. |
CTRL+PgUp | Moves to previous table left. |
CTRL+SHIFT+L | Set or remove filtering in a table. |
File operations |
|
CTRL+S | Saves the workbook. |
CTRL+N | Opens a new blank workbook. |
CTRL+O | Displays Open File dialog. |
CTRL+TAB | Circles through open workbooks. |
CTRL+SHIFT+TAB | Circles through open workbooks in reverse order. |
CTRL+F4 | Closes active workbook. |
ALT+F4 | Closes Excel or any active application in Windows. In none is open then closes Windows. |
Printing |

CTRL+P | Shows Print preview and possible selections. |
